We may not be sending volunteers here this summer - the related centre in Banoviči has closed due to financial problems. For the latest information, come to one of our meetings.
Vozuča is a special town because the very great majority of its inhabitants have been resettled there from the town of Šrebrenica and the surrounding villages. Šrebrenica witnessed some of the worst atrocities of the war, and so the people who now live in Vozuča treat it as their permanent home, unwilling to return to a place that will bring back so many terrible memories - this is unusual for most of the refugees in Bosnia. It is a very small town about one and a half hours’ drive from Tuzla.
Opportunities for OXAB volunteers
The facilities at the youth centre are very limited, but there are 350-400 children between 7 and 15 registered there, and the centre sees about 70 – 100 children pass through each day. The activities which take place are basic because of the lack of funding, and they complement the children’s’ school lessons. There are also special classes, for example traffic awareness lessons, because there were several accidents as these children, who come from the backward villages around Srebrenica, were not used to cars. There are also some classes for the widows such as writing and hairdressing which help them become more able to cope with the demands of their new life. There is one fairly big room with a small stage and another smaller room. There is a table tennis table, a stereo, a TV and areas for sports to be played in. There are no computers at the moment, but MCAB might donate some. A sports day, or a drama production would be particularly appropriate for the volunteers to organise, and also art and crafts with materials brought from the UK.
