Burgas Orphanage, Burgas
The orphanage is the second largest in Bulgaria (with 100 children there) and is one of the few orphanages which has children of a large age range (7-18). The majority of the children are able-bodied however some are slightly mentally disabled and need more help. Conditions in the home are pretty good, but it is understaffed and the children often crave attention. Burgas is a lovely city on the edge of the Black Sea. As the children have a nap after lunch volunteers can often go down to the beach for a swim/sunbathe. Although the town is fairly touristy, it is less so than the other towns on the Black Sea coast. Seeing neighbouring towns is easy because the local buses are regular and very cheap. Be prepared to mime and guess Bulgarian as very few people speak English
