Teaching English in Podujeva

Project Background: This project involves teaching English in Podujeva to Kosovan youths. The centre has computers for all the students and the teaching style is a mix of interactive learning online and printed handouts. They currently teach three slots of two hours a week but this could easily increase.

Accommodation: In Podujeva there are apartments that Manchester Aid to Kosovo use when they are in Kosovo which are arranged by Fazli. These are within ten minutes walking distance from the Peace Park and are very secure. The cost would be around £350 per week and the apartment can house up to ten people (based on people sharing rooms) so this works out at £35 per person. They are clean and well maintained.

Travel: If the students want to stay in Pristina (the capital) there is a bus service that runs all day and is very frequent and costs a euro one way. The travel time is about 40 minutes from centre to centre then there is a 15 minute walk to the Park.

Skill base of the volunteer required: A TEFL qualification is highly desirable but at a minimum the student must have had some training in how to teach English. Activities in the projects (possible daily routine):

  • Teaching English to various groups of people; students, and local businesses
  • Helping with CV writing and covering letters (letters of motivation)
  • Writing proposals to international organisations and proof reading

Development and future opportunities: We expect that there will be a continuing need for English teaching in Podujeva.

Possible security and safety concerns: Podujeva is a small town, population 134,000, outside Pristina and is safe and is very ethnically homogeneous (Albanian, 98%), reducing the likelihood of violence. One concern is its proximity to the Serbian border, 15 miles to the north; however, this is heavily policed by the international community.
