Past Projects

  • OXAB spent £1000 over Easter 2002 funding two computers, one television, nappies, sports equipment and 40 pairs of shoes. These were distributed between four homes in the Veliko Túrnovo area - Balvan, Gabrotsi, a Baby Centre and Veliko Túrnovo itself.
  • OXAB currently pays the salary of a social worker in Rudnik, this costs £150 a month.
This scheme was initiated by Lindsey Gallagher and her group after their trip to Rudnik, they arranged for the person to be employed and did the necessary fundraising for it.
  • OXAB in partnership with Foundation Zov funded a summer camp for 40 of the most underprivileged children from three different homes. This cost OXAB £1650 and enabled the children to have a 10 day long holiday at the seaside, accompanied by qualified carers and 3 OXAB volunteers.
  • OXAB gave £500 to help with the running costs of a counselling service for victims of the war in Velika Kladuša, Bosnia.
  • OXAB gave £2000 for renovations to be carried out on Penyo and Maria Velkivo. The enabled work, partly funded by the government, to be completed.
  • Friends of Bulgaria (a UK based charity) have helped to finance the establishment of a centre for handicapped children. OXAB donated £500 to help to pay for a transport vehicle for this centre, we hope to be able to send volunteers there in the near future.
  • Friends of Bulgaria organised for the collection of ‘presents’ to be distributed to the children. OXAB volunteers were able to give these out in Balvan (near Veliko Túrnovo) in Easter 2002. (See picture)
  • OXAB also give £50 per group to volunteers as aid money for the home that they go to. We hope to have over 25 groups this summer, amounting to at least £1250 in aid money distributed.

OXAB volunteers have also taken on small aid projects themselves or made donations, directly helping the home that they worked in - some examples of these:

  • Summer 2002 - Clothes collections for Ugarcin and Gomotatsi, purchase of a television and three irons for Veliko Túrnovo orphanage, teaching materials for The Samaritans. These are just a few examples from many, and we would encourage volunteers to mention in their trip report anything they bought while they were out there. It is good to be able to ‘check’ that what you bought is being used by the children, and for new volunteers to know what is available to entertain the children with. Up until 2002 OXAB groups got £50 worth of aid money to spend on the children, usually on arts and crafts material or sports equipment. From 2003 onwards the money has been invested in projects that will benefit the children in the long run
